Recently initiated mini-HTAs in Norway as of September 2026
Norway has a national framework for introducing new health technologies within the specialist health service, known as the "New Methods" framework. The framework supports evidence-based decisions on whether new methods should be introduced, retained, or discontinued in the Norwegian specialist health service. This framework ensures that all innovations undergo a formal Health Technology Assessment (HTA) before receiving funding approval.
The framework operates at two levels:
- National level, where decisions are based on HTAs and made jointly by the four Regional Health Authorities;
- Local level, where decisions are based on mini-HTAs performed locally by hospitals.
Since June 2026, seven new mini-HTAs have been initiated. Two MedTech-related examples are provided below:
- Peripheral thrombus aspiration with the Penumbra device at Inland Hospital;
- Joint introduction of Homologous Recombination Deficiency (HRD) testing at Oslo University Hospital.
