The Nordic AI Health Map launched

New Nordics AI is a Nordic-Baltic center for applied AI, enabled by the Nordic Council of Ministers and anchored in national AI ecosystem partners across the region. It connects companies, public organizations, governments, and decision-makers to accelerate the responsible development and adoption of AI through cross-border collaboration, knowledge sharing, and joint projects. 

On August 26, 2026, New Nordics AI launched the first Nordic AI Health Map. The map was jointly developed during the spring of 2026 through collaboration across all five Nordic countries, with funding from the Nordic Council of Ministers’ eHealth Group.

The initiative is designed to promote transparency, knowledge sharing, and collaboration across the Nordic region. By making AI initiatives visible across borders, the map enables healthcare organizations, decision-makers, and researchers to learn from one another, identify shared challenges, and explore opportunities for cooperation. 

The mapping documents over 800 AI initiatives across publicly funded healthcare in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland. The framework categorizes these efforts into eight usage areas and three implementation phases: concept, pilot, and routine operation.

Approximately one-third of the documented initiatives are already in routine operation. Real-world applications include speech recognition tools that free up time for healthcare professionals, image analysis that supports radiologists across multiple sites, and automated monitoring that reduces manual routine work.

Across the Nordic region, the largest documented area of AI use is clinical care and diagnostics, which also has the highest number of fully implemented initiatives. Administrative support for healthcare staff is the second-largest area.

At the same time, notable differences can be seen between countries and regions within specific fields of application. In areas such as stroke diagnostics and breast cancer screening, for example, some countries and regions already have solutions in daily operation, while others are only beginning to explore their use. This makes the map a valuable resource for organizations entering a new field, allowing them to identify and connect with peers who have already progressed further along the same journey.

The map should be viewed as a snapshot rather than a complete inventory. It does not aim to capture every AI initiative in Nordic healthcare, but instead to provide a representative and meaningful picture of the current landscape.

The data is planned to be updated annually. The long-term ambition is for the Nordic AI Health Map to become a living resource that supports the responsible and effective adoption of AI across Nordic healthcare.
