Changes in responsibilities for managing coding classifications in Sweden

From June 1, 2026, certain responsibilities will be transferred from the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) to the Swedish eHealth Agency (E-hälsomyndigheten). These include responsibility for managing classifications, including procedure coding (KVA) and diagnosis coding (ICD-10-SE). Responsibility for the diagnosis-related groups (DRG) system will remain with the National Board of Health and Welfare.

The first release of the DRG package for 2027 was published in the Netherlands

On May 1, 2026, the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa) published the first release of the 2027 DRG package (RZ27a). Seven new procedure codes, one new diagnosis code, two new supplementary payments (OZPs), and 23 DRGs will be implemented across multiple fields, including gastrointestinal, gynecology, pulmonology, men’s health, and in-vitro diagnostics (pathology).

Draft versions of new Italian classification systems for procedure and diagnosis coding released

On February 13, 2026, the Ministry of Health published an experimental version (so-called "Gamma") of new classification systems for diagnosis and procedure coding under the NSIS-CLASS project, launching the transition from ICD-9-CM. These systems will become mandatory for coding diagnoses and procedures from January 1, 2027, following a testing phase and the release of the final (“Delta”) versions by the end of 2026, with updates planned at least every two years.

The application window for changes to the Swiss outpatient reimbursement system is open

From February 1 to April 30, 2026, the OAAT AG (the entity managing the new Swiss outpatient reimbursement system) is accepting applications for the modifications of the TARDOC and Outpatient flat rates. Submitted proposals will be reviewed within the annual tariff development process, validated by the OAAT Board of Directors, and subsequently submitted to the Federal Council for final approval and publication.

The draft release of the DRG package for 2027 was published in the Netherlands

On December 19, 2025, the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa) published the draft release of the 2027 DRG package (RZ27a). Seven new procedure codes, one new diagnosis code, and one new supplementary payment (OZP) are expected to be implemented across in-vitro diagnostics, obstetrics and gynecology, gastroenterology, urology, and other technology groups.

First device obtained regular reimbursement after the pre-LPPR scheme in France

On December 19, 2025, an order was issued registering the Symplicity Spyral renal denervation catheter in Title V of the List of Reimbursable Products and Services (LPPR), enabling add-on reimbursement for medical devices used in hospital settings. The Symplicity Spyral received a positive opinion for LPPR registration in December 2023, following transitional coverage under the French innovative payment scheme known as pre-LPPR since December 2022.

New classification systems for procedure and diagnosis coding will be implemented in 2027 in Italy

On December 10, 2025, the Ministry of Health published the Decree for the update of classification systems for diagnosis and procedure coding, effective in 2027, with updates scheduled at least every two years and the continued use of ICD-10-IM until the transition to ICD-11. Implementation will proceed through a pilot phase in 2025 and a nationwide rollout in 2026, supported by conversion tools from ICD-9-CM to ensure continuity, with ICD-9-CM entirely discontinued as of January 1, 2027.

New CCAM codes introduced in France

In mid-December 2025, a new version of the Common Classification of Medical Procedures (CCAM v.81), effective January 1, 2026, was published. Multiple changes were implemented, including the introduction of four new procedure codes, the provisional registration of four codes, the deletion of a few codes, the modification of tariffs for numerous activities/phases, and the amendment of existing services.

The final version of the 2026 OPS procedure coding classification released in Germany

On October 24, 2025, the BfArM (Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices) published the final version of the 2026 OPS procedure coding classification. The OPS, together with the ICD-10-GM (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th revision, German Modification), forms the basis for the reimbursement systems in outpatient and inpatient care in Germany. Multiple new procedure codes were introduced in several fields, including cardiovascular, endoscopy, peripheral vascular, and orthopedics.
