Technologies awaiting final recommendations within the Lombardy HTA Program as of July 2026

The Lombardy Regional Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Program supports evidence-based decisions on the introduction and appropriate use of health technologies within the regional healthcare system. The program comprises several stages:

  • Identification and prioritization: Technologies are submitted by healthcare organizations, manufacturers, or other stakeholders and reviewed by the Regional HTA Commission. Technologies with a prioritization score of 0.60 or higher generally proceed to a detailed assessment;
  • Assessment: The Regional HTA Center, with possible support from the Regional Assessment Network, reviews the scientific evidence and prepares an HTA report, known as a technical report or HTA Alert, which is subsequently published for public consultation;
  • Appraisal: The Regional HTA Commission evaluates the HTA report, consultation feedback, stakeholder input, and expert opinions. The appraisal considers clinical need, effectiveness, safety, costs, organizational impact, equity, and implications for the regional health system;
  • Final opinion and recommendations from the Regional HTA Commission: An appropriateness-of-use index is calculated. A score of 0.50 or higher generally supports a favorable opinion, while a lower score generally leads to an unfavorable opinion. Recommendations may address patient selection, clinical pathways, reference centers, training, monitoring, reimbursement, and funding. The final opinion is advisory and supports decisions by Lombardy’s regional health authority.

As of July 2026, four medical technologies have completed the assessment stage and are currently under appraisal, awaiting the final opinion and recommendations of the Regional HTA Commission:

  • CtaPLUS software for coronary CT angiography analysis with FFR-CT (µFR-CT) and plaque characterization in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease;
  • Elecsys proBNP II for cardiovascular and heart failure risk stratification;
  • Prostate Health Index (PHI) for prostate cancer risk stratification;
  • Transfemoral osseointegrated prosthesis implantation.
