New Med Tech-related HTAs to support reimbursement decisions in Austria
The Austrian Federal Ministry of Health accepts proposals to include new medical interventions in the catalog of individual medical services (MEL) for reimbursement. The Ministry prioritizes selected interventions for assessment by AIHTA. For each selected intervention, AIHTA evaluates the available evidence on clinical effectiveness and safety through a systematic review. The certainty of the evidence is summarised using the GRADE framework, and the findings are published as decision support documents intended to inform reimbursement decisions.
On July 15, 2026, AIHTA published two decision support documents for the following procedures:
- Pharyngeal electrical stimulation (PES) for neurogenic oropharyngeal dysphagia;
- Transarterial periarticular embolization (TAPE) for local pain management in patients with knee and shoulder osteoarthritis.
AIHTA also published an update to a previous decision support document concerning the implantation of a wireless pulmonary artery pressure sensor in patients with advanced heart failure.
