July 2026 Med Tech-related health technology assessments from the NIHR in England

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) funds valuable independent research for health and social care decision-makers in England. Reports from the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Programme are published in the NIHR HTA Journal and inform the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance. 

In July 2026, two Med Tech-related assessments were published in the NIHR HTA Journal:

• Surgery for early structural osteoarthritis of the hip and knee, based on a systematic review, evidence synthesis, and health economic modeling. Surgical treatments were divided into non-regenerative, regenerative, load-modifying, and joint replacement procedures and compared with non-surgical treatment. It was concluded that there is a substantial lack of evidence supporting most surgical interventions used for early hip and knee osteoarthritis. Further high-quality comparative studies are needed to establish their clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness.
• PillCam COLON 2 for investigation of the colon through direct visualization. The study was based on a systematic review and health economic evaluation of clinical effectiveness, acceptability, and cost-effectiveness. It was concluded that colon capsule endoscopy is expected to be less effective and more expensive than colonoscopy. However, it could help to free up constrained colonoscopy services, particularly in people with symptoms suggestive of bowel cancer.
