NABM update sets regular reimbursement for two NGS panels in France
On June 2, 2026, the Decision of the National Union of Health Insurance Funds (UNCAM) updating the Nomenclature of Medical Biology Procedures (NABM) was released. NABM is the primary, permanent reimbursement catalog for in-vitro diagnostic tests covered under statutory health insurance.
The update introduces four new codes, including two codes under Chapter 21, "Constitutional genetics," for next-generation sequencing (NGS) gene panels used in the diagnosis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and other forms of cardiomyopathy, including dilated, arrhythmogenic, restrictive, and left ventricular non-compaction cardiomyopathies. The Decision takes effect 14 days after its publication.
Before their inclusion in the NABM, these tests were covered under the innovative payment scheme (RIHN framework) via generic codes in the List of Procedures Outside the Nomenclature (LAHN).
As part of the RIHN reform, the French National Authority for Health (HAS) evaluates the most expensive LAHN procedures to assess their potential inclusion in regular reimbursement through the NABM. In February 2025, HAS issued a positive recommendation on the registration of targeted NGS gene panels for the diagnosis of hereditary cardiomyopathies.
The latest NABM update is one of the first concrete outcomes of the RIHN reform, illustrating the transition of selected expensive tests previously covered outside the nomenclature toward regular reimbursement through the NABM.
