Work plan for the development of specialised commissioning policies in England as of July 2026

On August 3, 2026, NHS England released an updated work plan for the development of Clinical Commissioning Policies for specialised services reflecting the status as of July 17, 2026. 

Four policies were published concerning radiotherapy and orthopedic fields.

One of the published policies concerns stereotactic radiosurgery for essential tremor: NHS England will routinely fund unilateral thalamic stereotactic radiosurgery as an option for patients with medication-refractory tremor, after the currently commissioned procedures, deep brain stimulation (DBS) and transcranial MRI-guided ultrasound thalamotomy (TcMRgFUS), have been considered and following discussion at the joint TcMRgFUS and stereotactic radiosurgery multidisciplinary team.

The following new Med Tech-related policies were added to the work program:

• Mitochondrial donation to prevent transmission of mitochondrial DNA Disease;
• Total pancreatectomy and islet auto-transplantation (TPIAT) in children and young adults

The status of ongoing policies has also been revised.

Furthermore, two policies for proton beam therapy in pregnancy and gastro-oesophageal cancers have been discontinued due to insufficient evidence.
