Another round of the Appropriate Care framework program is now open in the Netherlands
The Appropriate Care Framework program (2024-2028) contributes to the broader transition towards appropriate care in the Netherlands. The program stimulates knowledge development and strengthens research infrastructure to support decisions on which forms of care should be reimbursed under basic health insurance. These decisions are guided by the principles of value-driven care: care that is effective, relevant to patients, and delivered with optimal use of people, resources, and materials.
On May 26, 2026, the Dutch Organization for Health Research and Development (ZonMw) opened the subsidy round “Paving the way for appropriate care” of the Appropriate Care Framework program. This round focuses on creating the organizational, process-related, and financial conditions needed for the sustainable and broad application of effective interventions. Eligible projects may address, for example, reducing or discontinuing inappropriate care, relocating care, reallocating tasks, developing network-based care, standardizing care pathways, implementing hybrid care, or increasing care capacity through the efficient deployment of healthcare professionals.
Grant applications can be submitted by a consortium consisting of at least two Dutch healthcare providers, one or more knowledge institutions or Dutch research organizations, and one or more relevant network partners. The total budget available for this subsidy round is €4.3 million. Applicants may request up to €300,000 per project, with a maximum project duration of 24 months.
The deadline for submitting a detailed grant application is September 1, 2026. Submission of mandatory pre-registration by July 3, 2026, is required.
