Ongoing coverage positions by the Dutch Healthcare Institute
The Dutch Healthcare Institute performs health technology assessments to inform decisions about the coverage status of pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical medical technologies. Procedures are reviewed according to the criteria of necessity, effectiveness (conformity with “state of science and practice”), cost-effectiveness, and feasibility (later, only in case of review before the implementation of the method). The Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Sport makes a final coverage decision based on the recommendations provided by the ZIN.
As of April 2026, the Dutch Healthcare Institute (ZIN) is working on several coverage positions in the otorhinolaryngology, dentistry, vascular interventional radiology, and gastroenterology fields, including the following Med Tech-related topics:
- Implantation of a second cochlear implant for adults with profound hearing loss or deafness;
- Bariatric surgery for adolescents with severe obesity;
- Renal denervation in treatment-resistant essential hypertension.
