Health Economic Publication Digest: Technological Maturity and Cost-Effectiveness of Medical Artificial Intelligence: A Systematic Review of Health Economic Evaluations

MTRC shares the most relevant and impactful publications in the field of market access and HEOR for medical technologies in Europe through its Health Economic Publications Digest.

In a recent publication, Godoy Junior et al. systematically reviewed health economic evaluations of medical artificial intelligence technologies to assess their reporting quality, methodological risk of bias, and technological maturity. 

The review of 117 studies showed that 63% of evaluations assessed AI technologies at early stages of clinical machine learning readiness. Despite frequent conclusions of economic benefit, only 28% of studies included implementation costs, and 57% reported operational costs. The authors concluded that current health economic evaluations of medical AI provide limited evidence for reimbursement and policy decisions.
