Health Economic Publication Digest: Health economic evaluations of digital health technologies – a rapid review of applied methods

MTRC shares the most relevant and impactful publications in the field of market access and HEOR for medical technologies in Europe through its Health Economic Publications Digest. 

In a recent publication, Campione et al. reviewed methods applied in economic evaluations of digital health technologies (DHT) published between 2020 and 2024. The authors identified 51 eligible studies, most of which were based on randomized controlled trials and used established economic evaluation approaches originally developed for non-digital health interventions. The findings identified substantial variation in study perspectives, cost categories, uncertainty assessment, and reporting quality, alongside limited transparency and potential bias in the underlying evidence. DHT-specific factors, including technology life cycles and transferability across user groups, were also rarely considered.
