Health Economic Publication Digest: Development of the Medical Device Economic Evaluation Methodological Quality (DEEM-Q) Assessment Checklist

MTRC shares the most relevant and impactful publications in the field of market access and HEOR for medical technologies in Europe through its Health Economic Publications Digest.

In a recent publication, Akpinar et al. developed the Medical Device Economic Evaluation Methodological Quality (DEEM-Q) checklist, a consensus-based tool designed to address methodological aspects of economic evaluations that are specific to medical devices.

Using a systematic review followed by a two-round modified e-Delphi process, the authors developed a 39-item checklist. It covers general economic evaluation domains (such as the choice of comparator and perspective) as well as device-specific issues, including learning curves, organizational impacts, incremental innovation, and evidence gaps. The DEEM-Q checklist may support more robust and consistent assessment of economic evidence informing medical device adoption and reimbursement decisions.
