Dutch ZonMw is open for applications to the Care Evaluation and Appropriate Use program
On August 4, 2026, the Dutch Organization for Health Research and Development (ZonMw) opened applications for subsidy round 3 “Impactful knowledge questions in medical specialist care” under the Care Evaluation and Appropriate Use (2024–2028) program. The deadline for submitting a study synopsis, including a relevance dossier, is December 4, 2026. The deadline for submitting the full grant application is May 13, 2027.
The Care Evaluation and Appropriate Use (2024-2028) program (Zorgevaluatie en Gepast Gebruik, ZE&GG) aims to implement appropriate care by evaluating and implementing knowledge about what constitutes appropriate care. The results of care evaluations conducted within the program are expected to contribute to changes in medical practice. The program is a joint initiative of all parties involved in medical specialist care, with ZonMw and the Dutch Healthcare Institute (ZIN) serving as strategic partners.
The current subsidy round aims to answer important knowledge questions with substantial societal impact through care evaluation research. The round is linked to the continuous process of identifying and prioritizing knowledge gaps in medical specialist care. Knowledge questions may be proposed by the key stakeholders in medical specialist care, including the Federation of Medical Specialists (FMS), the Dutch Nurses and Caregivers (V&VN), Health Insurers Netherlands (ZN), and ZIN.
A grant application can be submitted only if the ZE&GG program has nominated the applicant, and the proposal has been developed through co-creation in accordance with the Cycle of Appropriate Use methodology.
The total subsidy budget available for this round is €8 million, with a maximum of €1.5 million available per project.
