NICE delivery plan for unlocking growth by enabling safe AI innovation in England

On August 6, 2026, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) published its 2026/27 delivery plan, setting out how it will support the safe, effective, and scalable adoption of artificial intelligence across the NHS. The plan focuses on three areas:

  • Using AI for evidence generation and evaluating innovation;
  • Evaluating AI-powered health technologies;
  • Using AI to improve NICE’s own work.

Over the next year, NICE plans to develop approaches for the appropriate use of AI in generating, synthesizing, and reviewing evidence, continue evaluating AI-based health technologies, and publish four technology appraisals on AI technologies referred to NICE by the Secretary of State as part of the National HealthTech Access programme. NICE also aims to use AI to improve the efficiency of guidance production, with a goal of halving the staff time required to produce each piece of guidance by 2030.

Furthermore, NICE has announced an AI Framework to be released in the coming months. It is intended to provide a broader framework for how NICE develops, evaluates, and uses AI, building on the commitments set out in the delivery plan.
