New add-on reimbursement categories for burn treatment with skin substitutes in Switzerland

At the end of March, the entity managing the DRG system in Switzerland, SwissDRG, established several unscheduled add-on reimbursement categories (ZE) for the treatment of burns with skin substitutes. New ZE categories are valid from January 1, 2026, until December 31, 2026, for use in specific Swiss burn centers.

The examples of newly introduced ZE categories for burn treatments include the following:

  • ZE-2026-320.01 - ZE-2026-320.22 "Skin coverage, alloplastic, HNB, topical", with the categories differing depending on the covered square (from 600 cm² up to 24,000 cm² and more) and the tariffs ranging from 5,012 CHF to 179,000 CHF. The "HNB" designation refers specifically to the Novosorb Biodegradable Temporary Matrix;
  • ZE-2026-322.01 - ZE-2026-322.16 "Skin coverage, allogeneic, HEB, topical", with the categories differing depending on the covered square (from 2,600 cm² up to 24,000 cm² and more) and the tariffs ranging from 4,760 CHF to 42,500 CHF. The "HEB" designation specifies commercially produced donor skin sourced from ETB-BISLIFE;
  • ZE-2026-323.01 - ZE-2026-323.24 "Skin coverage, xenogeneic, HKR, topical", with the categories differing depending on the covered square (from 200 cm² up to 24,000 cm² and more) and the tariffs ranging from 4,980 CHF to 415,000 CHF. The "HKR" designation refers specifically to fish skin from Kerecis.

The newly introduced ZE categories should not apply if the products are administered within the framework of studies or via the manufacturer's donation program.
